Why using AI for your logo might not be the best decision… 👀
I get it, it's super accessible, it can speed jobs up to make you more productive, and we’ve got to move forward with the times. This is said by someone desperate not have her 15-year-old self roll her eyes at her 35-year-old self.
Copyright and legal issues…jumping straight into the big stuff.
You do not own the rights to the artwork. I can’t stress how important it is that you own the rights to your own logo.
Without the copyright, anyone out there can copy your logo or have a similar one and claim it to be their own. Especially as they could easily use all the same prompts. And you can do nothing about that…
With brands needing to cut through, this could mean that your campaigns or brands look like every other business that’s using AI for their creative.
Usability - it’ll be a pain in the arse. A designer will create a scalable and editable vector logo. Using AI, it will spit it out as a single image file - a JPEG.
A JPEG will be as useful as a chocolate teapot; it’ll have a lovely white or coloured background. It will pixilate if you want to use it at a larger scale, e.g. on OOH creative. You also won’t be able to edit it unless you give it another prompt. You’ll have to keep your fingers crossed that your prompt has been understood.
Environmentally. We all know this by now, it’s not great for the environment, so the more prompts that you are using, the more it’s negatively impacting the environment. On this note, many charities have done a lot of climate change campaigning. Does using AI align with these values?
Lastly, talking of values. Designers work with brands to understand their values and apply these through years of experience. To understand the problem that sometimes the client doesn’t realise yet. While AI can only create things that already exist out there.
I do feel like a cliche, another designer banging on about AI. But, it’s definitely something to consider before using AI for creative, as I’m sure lots of graphic designers (including myself! 👋 ) would love to put our human touch into your brand.
